From TV commercials to cross-dressing, queer romance is the latest craze in Korea.
Causing a stir among netizens, SK Telecom recently aired a new commercial with the zen-like tagline, “When you think he’s all right, there’s a girlfriend. When you think he’s perfect, there’s a boyfriend.” Well, I guess there’s some truth in the saying if you take into account all the members of Super Junior.
The promising fan service queer flick “Antique Bakery” has been the center of attention for some time now. Gorgeous men, gorgeous food, and some delicious man-on-man kiss scenes are enough to make this movie a cult favorite among fangirls.
Don’t forget about “Boy Meets Boy”, a movie about two boys who fall in love at first sight. If that wasn’t enough, it’s looks like they’re going to take a loosely based nonfiction spin on this story. Check out the bottom left corner of the poster: “Based on a true story”.
There’s also the highly anticipated historical movie “Frozen Flower”. Rumor has it, there will be a bed scene between eye-candy actors Joo Jin Mo and Jo Insung. Meow…kinky.
TV drama “Painter of the Wind” and movie “Portrait of a Beauty” are both cross-dressing stories based on a novel about a female painter disguised as a man.
Why all this gayness?
Fangirls simply can’t resist attractive men together. “Coffee Prince” and “The King and the Clown” were huge successes with their homosexual, gender-bending undertones. Point is, film and drama execs know that boy-on-boy action sells.

XDXDXDXDXDXD
oh goodness…
Hahaha, “Meow…Kinky.” and based on a true story,I could not stop laughing. That was a good one…
XD first.
Well… BL always sells ^^;; I just hope this is a phase and will pass.
xx
Its a change for the good, I think. Gay people are everywhere and it seems like the korean culture doesn’t accept it. Not sayin anything bad, cause I love me some koreans, its just that they seem to have a really negative attitude toward gays…but you can’t stop them. Anyway, I’ll watch these programs. They’ll probably be cute
Korea, believe it or not it’s okay to be gay.
Lol i think it’s hilarious how it’s all gay men. No lesbian dramas or movies anywhere! That’s not fair to all the horny fanboys who want just what fangirls want, just with women instead of men.
But what do I care. I’ll be watching all these :]
I’m surprised there isn’t any girl-on-girl to attract a bigger male audience. But then again, the primary audience for tvs and movies are girls, so I guess you might as well continue to target them.

its just hard to resist man on man action. Maybe because you don’t get to see this kind of action in reality…unlike TV/movies, you get to see everything from their action to thoughts
man-to-man with asian males seems more alright to me than any other race. i wouldn’t want to see black, white, or hispanic males together. for some reason, it seems alright to see with asians, LOL.
Sound interesting
Just by looking at kpop boybands—I thought Korea was ALREADY gay.
>_<
why not ???
it is not bad at all ^^
Surprising when you think about how conservative the country is. XD
HOMOSEXUALITY is not in.
HOMOEROTICISM is in.
Heterosexual pretty boy actors pretending to be stereotypically gay is accepted and adored, but if a real homosexual comes out of the closet in real life then they will probably be ostracized.
“man-to-man with asian males seems more alright to me than any other race. i wouldn’t want to see black, white, or hispanic males together. for some reason, it seems alright to see with asians, LOL.”
Huh?
@nah
I think it’s because asian males are girly in appearance by default.
@teehee
LOL!!!!!
@Anna Bessonova
I never thought about the homosexuality vs. homoeroticism. Interesting…
Ew..How lame …and totally disgusting.
@nah i kinda agree i’ve been to a gay club before and when i saw this big black thug looking guys walk in holding hands it just messed with my head.
In my opinon as a girl i rather see two girls kiss before two guys, that was before i got into KPOP and i saw all the guys hugging each other and being real close. Now it’s not too bad because i know some of it is just for show.
Still i want to see Antique Bakery.
Too bad, strong homophobia still exist in the general public. Sure, movies are fine, but in real life, no good, chico malo!
wth!!
I would not be surprised. A lot of the men look very feminine and they don’t act as masculine as other men around the world. I’m not saying they are but every other part of the world has homosexual men and women so why not Korea.
Peace
Gayness happens. Korea can’t keep themselves sheltered forever. Anyways it seems some folks like their stras to look a little feminine anyways….hello lee jun ki and kim jae wook
Anna Bessanova is right.
The thing I always found interesting about Coffee Prince was that desbite the homosexual subject, many fans refused to admit it was there. Instead they said that because Eun-chan turned out to be a girl, Han-gyul’s feelings can’t be considered homosexual in the first place. As if his heart somehow magically knew Eun-chan was really female.
would it be wierd to say i actually kind of like it???
Korea has always been gay, to a point.
wow…i love life
BRING IT ON KOREA!
this is supposed to be an article?
its true. guy on guy sells. if i had the money i would buy everything and anything that said guy on guy on it. that’s just hott.
pfft is korea going gay?
i think it went gay loooong time ago, it just didn’t know it.
i was looking forward to that boy meets boy movie. i like that one actor from jenny and junho
Yeah….they are kinda gay, but then that’s just how they are and as a girl, I kinda think it’s cute!
A lot of koreans won’t admit it.
theres like this huge phobia over tehre still.
The first celeb to comeout hong Suk chun? chon? is one brave man he had to endure so much shit. He still has lots of crap thrown at him but he’s still successful businessman and still has some roles on tv. He said theres homosexuals that are celebrities but their too afraid to come out.
BL sells in Japan and I guess the success of King and the Clown made Korea realize that. Strange how being gay seems to be so strictly taboo in Korea but they don’t mind “hinting” at it…as long as it’s for fanservice
Then again, Korea’s also one of the few entertainment industries with a well-known tg star like Harisu.
does it really matter seoulbeats
love is love ♥ =]
I guess it’s a bit of Japanese influence… Yaoi type entertainment has been a big hit in Japan for ages, I guess it’s drifting over to korea too.
It’s irritating though. People are like “omg, they’re soo cute together” if it’s two fictional guys, but when it comes to real gay couples…the tone is different.
seriously people! It’s the same concept lol
@ Anna Bessonova,
Your observations on Korean attitudes and a non-Korean’s take on it are always spot-on. I suppose we could just take this latest trend in Korean film and television as a development of sorts but still mindful, at the rate they are going, that it might still take a generation or two for Koreans to have a completely different mindset.
I enjoyed the other comments here. They made me lol. SHINEE FAN summed it up well.
i dont get the commercial still….
so, what’s left for women there…? the spill over..
true! homsexuality is still taboo in particularly any country but i think mainly in asian countries.
my friend’s homo but when he came over to my house for dinner with his boyfriend, my parents went all ..uh!
i dunno y ppl cant accept dat some ppl are gay!
BUT
if any of my fav boybands claimd their gay, i would DIE!
CONFIRMATION
sorry no bed scene between insung and joo jin mo there is only insung bed scene with Song Jihyo you are too much watch brokeback mountain. joo jin mo is gay, insung bisex.
Yeah, there’s a interest in all of it, but seriously, Korea’s very comfortable with same sex skinship. I watched two of my middle students grab and twist each others’ balls in the middle of the hallway during a class break. The other teacher I was with merely told them to move to the side. Simply put, the closeness betwee two people of the same sex is quite common.
*between
“its just hard to resist man on man action.”
“man-to-man with asian males seems more alright to me than any other race.”
WTF??? you guys are f*cked in the head! listen up..NO man on man action…whether it’s homosexuality OR homoeroticism…is sexy! i would rather NOT watch guys doing each other, thanks!
Anna Bessonova brings up a really good point. interest in homoeroticism but denial of homosexuality occurs in a lot of asian countries, even in japan (although that’s due more to the western influences upon the country after it opened its doors). still… maybe the increase of this type of media will open the door a little more for the homosexuals in korea.
YESSSS KEEP THAT GAY COMING, KOREA <333
Also, LOL commercial, so true. XD
Daaaaaaammmmnnnn, does Jo In Sung look fine…. He’s a sight for sore eyes, haven’t been seeing him in any recent movies or dramas…
The gay thing is all the rage now.
Yaoi manhwas are quite popular… I haven’t tried reading them yet… I’ve heard that Korean yaoi is very drawn out and dramatic. Typical.
“When you think he’s all right, there’s a girlfriend. When you think he’s perfect, there’s a boyfriend.”
What the hell does that even mean?
All people needs is time. First come the movies then next comes reality.
i smell some homophobia here.
zzZzz..
what’s wrong with that? haha. gays are fun to be with. ^^
gayness everywhere these days, and AIDS too..
ok ONE.
i am not homophobic.
TWO.
i hate these gayass pairings that fans make between artists.
its okay if its like “friendship” or watever, as in a shortcut, cause the pair are funny together… but when it becomes like… yaoi, thats just wrong. esp since their not.
men should be with women and women with men. hell if you want man or man and girl on girl what else will the taste of man’s desire bring , pedophillia or bestiality. These kinds of movies open up an atmosphere that I don’t think the world is ready to progress to. Everyone says it’s alright until it’s in your face and you have to deal with the “not so pretty” side of it. Get real people, society is built on morals and it looks like Korea is throwing theirs out the window for the sake of entertainment. I hope they wake up before it’s too late
“When you think he’s all right, there’s a girlfriend. When you think he’s perfect, there’s a boyfriend.”
That means when you find a guy you like, he is taken and has a girlfriend. But when you find a guy you’re head over heals for he is gay!(or has a boyfriend) Get it??
all the guys in Korean ent are gay…
bin laden..LOL
sure is. i remembered though i posted the exact same gay stuff in one of the articles about dbsk boys didnt realised that spring felt the same as winter-windy breeze’cold! and people living in the desserted area always covered up.”
this : MSNBC contributor Tony Sclafani wrote “The litmus test of hypocrisy here is that if you substituted a different minority in Perry’s tunes, they’d never get airplay. ‘Ur So Korean’ would not be Top 40. wallaa.. so lost between china and japan being in the middle doesnt need much effort for korea to get the fame being just themselves enough for the world to notice.
seriuosly no joke i mean the whole crap about Perry’s song is just stupid to brag about think of this: when elton john married his GAY PARTNER is being supported, blessed by fans around the world saying its ok-ah where’s tony hedious sclafani column about him?lol
but its freaking obvious korea is awesome only for their beauty mark of true nature. but absolute nothing with:music, movies or dramas or their president flying to america especially for supporting/remembering the days of elvis or ban ki moon rap for jay-z or such losers attempt to make it in hollywood to nothing with all that they dont have to try anything they are known for the lable ‘UR SO KOREAN’ actually means ‘UR SO GAY’ officially. ouch..
i dont really agree but it is true, now.
but correct me when im wrong if i am but face the reality and if im being racist with my own heritage, i shouldnt care about kpop but you bet i got my time wasted looking for fun trivia articles about celebs and searching for hours for my favourite hwangbo or skipping my meal watching online dramas. you bet i do.
Things portrayed in the media are ok as long as its not in your face or one of your family members, righ? Let’s be real were all okay until it directly affects us. I have gay friends but I don’t know how okay I would be with it if my brother was gay.
Being gay in Korean totally isn’t accepted. Why all the sudden homosexual love? There’s a very weird treatment of homosexuality/transgender/bisexual/anything not hetero in Korean culture. You see it constantly on game shows where male actors/singers/tv personalities hold hands, hug each other, drape themselves over another guy’s shoulders, cross dress, etc but in terms of actual homosexuality it’s such a no-no that when a gay comedian came out he was banned from being on TV for like 10 years. It’s like “Sure, it’s ok to be gay” but then if you actually are they’re suddenly like “no, we weren’t serious, wtf is the matter with you?”
Stop the H8te. Stop Prop 8. Refer to California.
But anyway. I agree with Anna Bessanova#1. A not so obvious insight into general attitude of the Korean populace. I hope people pay attention to your comment. There is a difference although we hope… that popularization of one leads to the acceptance of the other.
As for Korea… until another “trend” comes along I suppose. Remember the rise of the transgendered pop stars? (Ex: Harisu, pop group Lady).
Holy crap XD; hypocrisy hypocrisy. I’m quite happy with this new trend of Korea’s, and I’m going to enjoy the crap out of watching all of these. And if my brother was gay I’d bake him a cake and we’d be bestest buddies for the rest of forever ;D. I hate BL fans who can’t stand it in real life. Seriously ladies, pick a side.
I didn’t think homoeroticism vs. homosexuality was so deep an insight? But it’s certainly true, and love of fake-gay does not always lead to acceptance of real-gay, but it’s a start! I think Japan is way farther than Korea on the acceptance scale, and we know that this trend started there a lonnnggg time ago. I wonder if it’s really Korean culture that causes this problem, or if it’s the pervasive Christianity there… huuuu.
Either way, as someone else said earlier BRING IT ON KOREA
My desire to learn your language is finally going to start coming in handy.
