Although the month of November’s coming to an end, and with a new issue already on stands, I thought this young catwalk veteran would still be worth a mention.
Hyoni Kang, who like many up-and-coming starlets like to reinvent themselves with new professional names, popped out at me while I was flipping through pages of my month-old magazine. Born Kang Seung-hyun, this 19-year-old youngin was previously featured in Teen Vogue’s September issue in a 7-page spread and once more in the November issue with a mini inside look to her goings-on in NYC.
The cheerful five-foot-ten winner of the Ford Supermodel contest (2008) has had an uber season strutting the catwalks of Marc by Marc Jacobs and 3.1 Phillip Lim. She’s also had the fortune of booking four mega campaigns with Target, Benetton, American Eagle and Victoria’s Secret. Speaking to Teen Vogue, Hyoni says she wants “to become a supermodel!” and has cited “Sex and the City” as a good way to learn English.
Hyoni in 3.1 Phillip Lim Resort 09.
In Karen Walker Fall 08.
And in Tracy Reese Spring 09.
It’s nice to see more and more Asian models getting recognized in the fashion industry but let’s hope this Ford model signing doesn’t get too wrapped up in all the superficial glamor her rock-solid career provides.
Check her out in the September spread below.

5″10 ? …how tall is she in cm? like 178-180? O.o gosh, she’s taller than any average korean males LOL
that’s not really shocking in fashion world, i suppose =)
I love how she looks like a natural Korean female (not plastic like most). Kudos to her.
^ agreed LOL and she’s really pretty in that pink dress (the 4th pic)
looks ugly and super anorexic. she looks good in the catwalk pix though
i actually got scared looking at the thumbnail pic accompanying this story at the front page. scary face.
some ppl sound jealous.
she’s cute))
she’s cute. But i’ve seen better looking Korean girls that could be models. XD
She’s cute. But not super good-looking. Works for her, I guess. Some people like the non-plastic look.
I think she’s really cute! And quite unique, too.
she’s no that pretty but she looks ok. it doesn’t really matter if ur pretty or not in modelling.. at least she’s not plastic
most High Fashion models arent the everyday “pretty”. Their unique and have “the” look lol.
shes so adorableee!
SUPERMODELS AND MODELS DON’T HAVE TO BE PRETTY PPL. THEY JUST NEED TO HAVE THE SUPER LONG LEGS, HEIGHT AND UNIQUE FEATURES BUT NOT PRETTY
she looks like a real korean
its funny how the west is more accepting of natural korean looks than actual koreans
she doesnt look anywhere close to being anorexic.
just in case some people havent opened their eyes. asian girls are getting taller by the minute(whereas the guys are shrinking) and most are naturally skinny/slender.
Oh yes, I read those two issues and liked her immediately. She has a really sweet smile and personality. Let’s hope she becomes the next It girl! The runways needs another top Korean model especially after Hye Rim Park got married.
@Afterglow
it’s really not that hard to be taller than the average Korean male…. i am…and all of my friends are -_-
She’s adorable…but those poses are strange.
she’s so cute! looks like she’s having a ball in those pictures.
and i agree, it’s definitely good to see asians representing.
I love how she looks very korean without being either the Western concept of pretty (like…many Asian stars :P) OR the western concept of asian-pretty (e.g. Lucy Liu), and very natural. love!
shes adorable esp in the last few sets of pictures.
EW…
yay for koreans :]
i hope for her future and ongoing success as a model, supermodel
she’s pretty! And the US certainly needs more Asian high-profile models.
she’s so cute
she has cute smiling eyes
She’s not the ideal type of beauty everyone wants, but you know, SHE’S REAL—and that’s awesome.
You can call her ugly all you want, but she’s making $$$ and has a great job because of her ‘uglyness’ and height. =P
people!- she is the IDEAL type for supermodels…. supermodels dont look like plastic fantastic korean celebs -.-
— i think she looks reallly gorgeous in the whole spread (: FTW hyoni! =D
shes spunky and her face is what most designers want in a asian model that classic oriental features.
she definately has the “eye smile” and round face completing the stereotypical east asian look that the west finds so endearing.
She’s very cute and she’s unique and looks like she’s having a blast (which the tone of the pictures)
I agree seoulbeats, I hope it doesn’t go to her head and she achieves her dream of becoming a supermodel
I am so glad she didn’t get that double eyelid surgery that is so popular nowadays. I hope Asian girls see that their features are what make them unique and stop changing themselves to fit western standards.
lol…people always assume models to be anorexic…but she’s no way near that level. Look at that chubby bits of her, can’t you tell that she’s probably just healthy?
Aaaww, she’s cute~
Koreans have round eyes, slant eyes, droopy eyes…there isn’t just one look.
I think she looks interesting.
i think she is not typically pretty but she is very model-esque
the next du juan?
